Rating: G

Warnings: Mention of torture, and injured characters. And is completely void of slash.

Summary: The team has escaped Hanoi Hilton and is now recuperating.

Disclaimer: Stephen J. Cannell owns the A-Team and all associated characters. I claim anyone else.

Author's note: It kind of bounces back and forth between four points of views but I will make it very clear who's POV it is. The POV's are separated by the song lyrics.

Second Author's note: This series just keeps getting longer! Okay so far I have a series of fics planned out in this order: And Then A Hero Comes Along, The Fire, Don't Speak, and then Did it For You. Who knows? That series of fics might not happen but that's what is planned. But this is the only fic that is a song fic.

Song note: The song Hero is sung by Mariah Carey. /// Indicates the separation between fic and song.

Dedication: To all the hero's since September 11.

Captain HM Murdock lay on the hospital cot watching Lieutenant Templeton 'Faceman' Peck sleep. He knew he should be doing the same thing but couldn't fall asleep. They had escaped the Hanoi Hilton yesterday. They had been ordered to stay in the MASH unit for at least 24 hours. Maybe longer for Face they had said. Hannibal had said something earlier about them being rewarded with medals. For being heroes he guessed. Though he didn't feel like one.

///There's a hero

If you look inside your heart

You don't have to be afraid

Of what you are///

Face lay there pretending to be asleep. If he didn't pretend to sleep a nurse would probably inject him with something so he could.

He couldn't sleep because of the nightmares. His broken ribs and arm bothered him but the nightmares were worse to him.

He opened his eyes and looked around. It was quiet. He saw nurses walking around the room checking on other patients. He moved his head to the side and saw Murdock staring at him. "You okay Face?" Murdock asked.

Face didn't answer just closed his eyes again.

///There's an answer

If you reach into your soul

And the sorrow that you know

Will melt away///

Sergeant BA Baracas sat up in bed. He didn't care what the nurses and doctors said about staying in bed. He was going to check on his 'little brother's' who were on the other side of the room. He didn't like how they were separated. The doctor said there wasn't four beds together in the same area. They'd spent 6 months in a POW camp being tortured and starved and now he couldn't stand being away from the rest of them.

Colonel John 'Hannibal' Smith was on his left smoking a cigar. The nurses had finally given up on stopping him from smoking. If it hadn't been for Hannibal's crazy plan they would still have been in the camp. He was the hero.

///And then a hero comes along

With the strength to carry on

And you cast your fears aside

And you know you can survive///

Hannibal puffed on the cigar not even noticing BA sitting up. His mind was on other things. His commander, Colonel Samuel Morrison, had talked to him that morning about Face being medically discharged. The injuries weren't that severe. Face would recover from a broken arm and ribs in no time. The problem was he wasn't talking. He screamed because of the nightmares. Hannibal could hear him from the other side of the room last night. He didn't want to agree with Morrison but maybe he was right.

He remembered something else Morrison said. He called them all heroes for escaping the Hanoi Hilton. Murdock had said that Hannibal was the real hero but right now he didn't feel like one. He did notice BA was no longer in the bed next to him. He wondered where he went.

///So when you feel like hope is gone

Look inside you and be strong

And you'll finally see the truth

That a hero lies in you///

BA limped across the room ignoring the nurses who tried to stop him. "Hey big guy!" Murdock said. "Hey Face BA's here." He said hoping to get a response from his best friend.

Face opened his eyes and stared at BA for a second before staring straight ahead.

///It's a long road

When you face the world alone

No one reaches out a hand

For you to hold///

"Glad to see you awake Faceman." BA said sitting in a chair between Murdock and Face's beds. "You were pretty out of it yesterday. Even more out of it then the fool was."

"Sergeant Baracas!" One of the nurses said. "You should be lying down."

"I just want to see my friends." BA said softly knowing that yelling wouldn't get him anything.

Murdock looked at the nurse with pleading eyes.

"Just don't let Shana or Lieutenant Nicks see you." She walked away.

"Billy wants to know how your foot is BA. He wants you to play with him." Murdock asked.

"Foot's fine and there ain't no dog." BA said he looked at Face to see if there was any reaction but Face had his eyes closed again. "Is he sleeping?"

"Nah I think he's faking it." Murdock said. "I think he's getting better."

"Did you hear what Morrison said?"

"No what?"

"He's saying Face should be discharged. Said he's unfit for duty."

"Hannibal won't let it happen. Will he?"

Face listened to the two of them talking. 'Discharged?' He wondered. Did he want to be discharged and go home? He wondered. 'They'd probably lock me up.' Hannibal, BA, and Murdock were his best friends he didn't want to go. He finally looked at Murdock and BA. They had stopped talking and were looking at him worriedly.

///You can find love

If you search within yourself

And the emptiness you felt

Will disappear///

Hannibal watched the others from his bed. He was worried about his men. He didn't think any of them, including himself, could get over what happened over the past six months. If it hadn't been for Lin Duck Coo's help they might not have made it out of the Hanoi Hilton. There was a hero to him.

///And then a hero comes along

With the strength to carry on

And you cast your fears aside

And you know you can survive

So when you feel like hope is gone

Look inside you and be strong

And you'll finally see the truth

That a hero lies in you///

"Colonel Smith?" Lieutenant Peter Nicks asked. Lieutenant Nicks was one of the doctors who had treated him and the others when they were brought in. "You may leave now. We kept you mostly because of your being malnourished but I believe you will be fine."

"Thank you Lieutenant." Hannibal said and started to get out of bed. "What about the others?"

"Captain Murdock should be fine. Though, he might want to see a psychiatrist about his invisible dog. Sergeant Baracas's leg should heal soon. We'd like to keep him here for another day. Lieutenant Peck is another story. His arm and ribs will heal fine. But we are worried about his mental health. He won't sleep unless sedated. And when he is sleeping, he has nightmares. Not to mention the fact that he has yet to speak since you came here. Did Colonel Morrison discuss with you discharging Lieutenant Peck?"

"Yes he did. I just don't know."

"Understandable. But you must think of Lieutenant Peck's needs. He needs help."

"Thank you doctor." Hannibal said and got off the bed. He walked over to where the others were.

"Watch out Colonel." Murdock said. "The nurses aren't too happy about BA being out of bed."

"I've been released. How's Face doing?" Hannibal asked.

"Not much different. He's responsive at least." Murdock said looking at Face. "Don't let them discharge him."

"I'm inclined to agree with the others Murdock. Face isn't fit to fight. He needs help." Hannibal said.

///Lord knows

Dreams are hard to follow

But don't let anyone

Tear them away///

Face listened to the others arguing about him. He did realize not speaking was ridiculous but he wanted to be left alone. He thought not talking would make his problems go away.

///Hold on

There will be tomorrow

In time

You'll find the way///

"Stop." Face said that so quietly the others didn't think they had heard him.

"Face?" Murdock asked getting out of bed. He noticed more clarity in Face's eyes then there had been in quite some time.

Hannibal breathed a small sigh of relief. He was glad to see his lieutenant talking even if it was one word.

"Don't want to leave." Face said.

"We won't let you little bro." BA said.

"We are a unit and nothing is going to keep us apart." Hannibal said. Hannibal said putting a hand on the shoulder of Face. BA

smiled one of his huge smiles and Murdock's eyes shone.

They were all going to be all right. Hannibal realized.
