Copyright:  November, 2008

Chely Smith-Peck sits in her porch swing holding that letter.  She rolls her eyes as she reads the words.  'I have always loved you Chely.' she ruefully chuckles.  "I'm sure you did mother!" Chely angrily says as she swings back and forth.  She gulps the whiskey down.  Lieutenant Templeton "Faceman" Peck walks outside with a small radio.  He eases his way over to his depressed wife.

He sits down in the swing and takes her into his arms.  Chely sees her husband worried about her and rests her head on his chest.  "Why Temp?" she asks barely in a whisper.  Face wraps his arms around his wife and holds her tight.  "I don’t know honey." he says holding her tight to him, as if she would slip through his grasp.

"Why would Uncle Jesse and the family lie to me?  Why would they tell me that my mother was dead?" she asks fighting back tears; even though the warm tears are now wetting her husband's shirt.  Face runs his fingers through Chely's red hair.  "Babe, I don't think your family lied to you on purpose."  Chely looks at her husband.  "What are you talking about?" she asks enjoying the feeling of the whiskey flowing through her veins and into her head.

"Maybe, Jesse and the family thought they were in a way protecting you." Unshed tears threaten to fall out of her eyes.  Chely rests her head back on his chest.  "I suppose you're right." she says as she feels her husband's arms wrap around her.  They rock in the swing.  After a few minutes, Chely breaks the silence.  "Temp?" she asks.  "Yeah?"  "What should I do?" she asks looking into his eyes to find the answer.

Face inhales and exhales.  "I can't tell you what to do about the letter." He pauses.  "But I can tell you what I would do." Chely's blue eyes lock with Face's.  "I would answer the letter.  I'm not saying you have to say 'I love you mom' or anything like that." He reaches over and turns on the radio.  "Just let her know how you feel." he says taking Chely back into his arms.  Kelly Pickler's I Wonder softly fills the Langely air.

Sometimes I think about you
Wonder if you're out there somewhere thinking about me
And would you even recognize,
The woman your little girl has grown up to be
'Cause I look in the mirror
And all I see
Are your brown eyes looking back at me
They're the only thing you ever gave to me at all
Oh, I hear the weather's nice in California
There sunny skies as far as I can see
If you ever come back home to Carolina
I'd wonder what you'd say to me

Face looks over at his wife.  Chely wraps her arms around Face's body and sighs.  "Are the kids asleep?" she asks.  The handsome lieutenant leans down and kisses the top of her head.  "Sleeping like angels; the little devils!" Face says smiling.  Chely looks up at Face and playfully hits his arm.  "Don't call your kids little devils!"  Chely gets up from the swing and makes her way to the front door of the house.  "Even though they take after you!" she says sticking her tongue out at Face as she walks inside.  Face smiles as he links his hands behind his head.

Chely grabs a tablet and a pen.  She sits down at the desk and begins to write.  As she writes, Face turns the volume up just a little.

I think about how it ain't fair
That you weren't there to braid my hair like mother's do
You weren't around to cheer me on
Help me dress for my high school prom like mother's do

Chely think backs to a dance that Daisy helped her get ready for.  "I don’t know Daisy!" Chely says as Daisy zips her dress up.  "Chely, you look gorgeous!  There's no way that no guy there wont' wanna dance the evening away with you!" Daisy says to her doubtful cousin.

Did you think I didn't need you here
To hold my hand, to dry my tears
Did you even miss me at all

"Did you miss me at all, Connie?!" she asks gritting her teeth as she continues to write.

Oh, I hear the weather's nice in California
There sunny skies as far as I can see
If you ever come back home to Carolina
I'd wonder what you'd say to me

Chely contemplates the next words that hit her.

Such a simple word
But it's so hard to do
When you've been hurt

'Though I would never leave my children, I guess I can't hold any fault to you.' writes Chely.

Oh, I hear the weather's nice in California
And just in case, you're wondering about me
From now on, I won't be in Carolina
You're little girl is off…
You're little girl is off…
You're little girl is off to Tennessee

Chely finishes the letter.  She takes the pad outside to Face and sits back down in the porch swing.  Face runs his fingers through her red hair.  "That was quick." he says.  "I don't know if I'll send it or not." Chely says relaxing in her husband's arms.  She rests her hands on his.  "Maybe, I'll send it one day." Face smiles.  "Whatever you say honey."

"I would never do that to you or the kids." Chely says.  Face lifts her head up and locks eyes with her.  "I know you never would honey." he lightly kisses her lips.  "Besides, you wouldn't get very far."  "And what does that suppose to mean?" Chely asks.

"There are two factors to the theory.  The guilt would eat you alive and number two is an entire household that would turn over everything and everyone to get you back."  Chely smiles and says, "You know what, you're right!" Chely and Face laugh.  "I love you Mrs. Peck.” Face says to his wife.  Moving closer to her husband, Chely whispers, "I love you Mr. Peck."  They kiss.
