Thoughts Inside the Box

It was the perfect plan: pose as one of the victims, get the drop on the guards, then have my back-up sweep in and mop up.

* * * * *

He was the first one out of the truck, taking up a position near one of the guards. As arranged, one of the illegals stumbled getting out. That was his chance. When the guard went to yank the man back to his feet, he elbowed the guy in the ribs, snatched his rifle, and fired into the air.

Okay, guys!’ he yelled. ‘Let’s go!’

Silence.

Face! Murdock! B.A.!’

He felt the barrel of a rifle in the small of his back.

Oh, great!’

There was no answer. That’s when I knew I was in trouble.

Taggert’s still trying to figure out who I am. He’d pulled off my wig, so there was nothing to do but get him riled. That’s so easy to do with slime-balls like him. When I think about it, Face probably gets his smart mouth from me.

The blow to the gut could almost rival B.A.’s. Almost, but not quite. It’s rare that a hit like that can get any sound out of me, but this one sure did. It didn’t help that he got me in the back of the neck right afterwards, either. I felt myself falling into the arms of two of Taggert’s goons. I didn’t make it easy for them when they dragged me away from the truck.

When I saw where they were dragging me, though, I almost panicked.

I’ve been in boxes like this before, back in ‘Nam. To say that they were not pleasant places would be the understatement of the century. A sheet metal box too small to stand up or stretch out fully, set out in the sun with little or no ventilation, with passing guards pounding on it and throwing insults – and worse - at the occupant. Men have died in these boxes. Not the way I’d choose to spend my leisure time.

Taggert’s taunting me again. I can’t let it get to me, so I toss back a few more facetious remarks about hanging some pictures in here. I smile slightly, even though it feels like my head is split wide open. He leaves, angry, and I’m glad to know that I’m getting to him.

I’m alone now. I can hear Taggert instructing his men, ignoring me. Just as well.

How long has it been? It’s getting warmer in here…

A feeling of dread creeps up my spine. I know, in my mind and in my heart, that my Team would never willingly abandon me. So, what’s happened?

* * * * *

How long has it been? The light in my eyes is blinding…

* * * * *

They can’t have been caught by Taggert’s men. If they had been, they’d be in the compound, too, and they‘d send me a signal of some kind. Then we could get together and find a way out, along with the illegal immigrants Taggert’s been transporting.

You are my sunshine…my only sunshine…

I’m sure Taggert’s men haven’t found and killed them. If they were dead, Taggert would be bragging about it, and I won’t believe it until I see the bodies, anyway. Still, there’s just no sign of them, and that worries me.

* * * * *

How long has it been? I can feel the sweat rolling down my back…

* * * * *

I know we’re back on American soil. Have they been picked up by MP’s? If so, I’m in a world of trouble. I’ll probably die here. Not that I’m not ready. I’d just like to have my sons around me when I go…

* * * * *

How long has it been? The air is stifling; I can hardly breathe…

* * * * *

I can hear Taggert coming back. He thinks he’s so fierce. Chao could eat him for breakfast, and I beat Chao. My head feels like someone’s using a jack-hammer on it, and my mouth is so dry I can’t spit cotton, but I can still handle a scuzz-ball like Taggert.

Gotta hold on…

* * * * *

Come on, guys! I have faith in you…
