Golden Boy

I've always been proud of Scooter. He was always a good boy. So many of the other boys in the neighbourhood went to the bad, but not my Scooter. He was more interested in machines than in mischief.

First it was his bike. He spent more time with it in pieces on an old sheet on his bedroom floor than he did riding it. But when he did, it was, he proudly told me, the fastest bike on the block.

Later on it was cars. He saved up and bought one that had to be towed to our house and looked like it should have been heading to the junk yard instead. But Scooter worked every hour the Lord sent on that car and the first time he drove it down the street I thought I'd never seen anyone wear a bigger smile.

Scooter was never an A student at school. Oh, he worked hard, and I saw to it that he did his homework, but his brains were always in his hands not his head. But I remember one time he came home with a smile on his face almost bigger than him. He had written an essay about what he wanted to be when he grew up. Of course he wanted to be a mechanic, and wrote all about how he loved cars. And not only did he get an A the teacher stuck on a gold star too. I hugged him and made him his favourite meal and he talked all through it about how one day he would have his own shop.

Then the war came. Scooter tried to reassure me that the best training a mechanic could get was in the army. But I think I knew then that things would never turn out the way he had hoped.

I take out that essay sometimes and read his hopeful, childhood plans and I look at the star and I remember that, long before he owned even one of those chains and rings he wears, Scooter was my golden boy.
