He turned it over and read the label again.  Dinty Moore Beef Stew.  He remembered the first time they had cooked out in the open.  Beef stew and hard biscuits.  The biscuits had been terrible, the stew not bad, but the company was good.  The best.

He knew he was probably being silly, and he knew when they saw what he was fixin', they were gonna give him a hard time about his choice for their supper -- mystery meat with vegetables and gravy.  He didn't even like it all that much himself.  Couldn't hold a candle to what his mama made.  But it had been one of those days, one of those days when he wondered how much more they could take, how much more they'd have to take. And he needed something.

He needed the comfort of what they'd had back then.  That first night of freedom, well, what passed for freedom for them anyways.  The easy talk and chatter and laughter, lazing under the stars, sitting close around the fire to keep the chill away, and eating beef stew out of a can. . .

Best meal he'd had since. . .

Where was that can opener?
