I was going to write this story and post it on Dirk Benedict's birthday

All Because Of You
By Terri Spencer

Rated PG
Summery: Face angsts beside a wounded Hannibal
Warning: Not beta Read. Also, so sappy at times that if can cause cancer in lab rats.
Notes: I was going to write this story and post it on Dirk Benedict's birthday. As you may have noticed, I missed that by a long shot! So instead, I decided to post it on the 10th Anniversary of George Peppard's death. I hope that fan's of Mr. Peppard like it. Mr. Peppard was a gifted actor.
On a personal note, some of what I say in this story are memories I had of my Dad, who died a year ago, April 26. I often teased Dad, the same way that Face teases
Hannibal in a flashback. And what I saw in Dad's eyes, I write in what Face see's in Hannibal's eyes. So this story is a small tribute to my Dad as well as George.
I hope that you enjoy it.

It's All Because of You

Templeton "Faceman" Peck silently entered the small room, carrying a newspaper in his right hand. He glanced at the man laying unconscious on the bed, with bandages taped to his stomach and chest. Face bit back a sob as he struggled with his emotions. But it was a lost cause. Tears rolled down his face as he went to stand beside the bedside of his injured friend. "I'm sorry, Hannibal," he wept. "It should have been me."

The mission was supposed to be an easy one. Some developing company had been threatening a family, and the Team had been hired to help out. No big deal. These missions had become routine for Face by now, and he knew what to do. Or so he thought. He had been thinking about his upcoming date with Carrie when he should have been watching for unfriendlies. A fire fight had broken out, and Hannibal had pushed Face out of the line of fire, while taking bullets in his abdomen and upper left chest.

The team had quickly loaded Hannibal into BA's van, and Face, being second in command, ordered BA to head for Maggie Sullivan's. BA had been furious with Face, but obeyed his commands. Murdock sat in the back with Hannibal, holding pressure over Hannibal's wounds. They had gotten to Maggie's in record time, and she had taken Hannibal immediately into surgery. Murdock and BA had assisted her, not letting Face near Hannibal.

That had been three days ago. Twice Hannibal had gone into cardiac arrest, and twice Maggie had barely been able to save him. Hannibal remained unconscious, and Maggie was afraid that Hannibal might have brain damage due to the loss of blood.

The news that Hannibal may have brain damage almost put BA over the edge. He picked up Face by his lapels and slammed him against the wall. He didn't even notice that Face cried out in pain. "THIS IS YER FAULT, SUCKA!" he yelled. "IF YA HAD BEEN WATCHING OUT, INSTEAD OF DREAMIN' OF YA NEXT CONQUEST, HANNIBAL WOULDN'T HAVE HAD TO SAVE YER BUTT!"

BA reluctantly put Face down, and turned to see Maggie. Maggie's eyes were ablaze, and she ordered BA and Murdock out of the office. "You need to do a little cleanup anyway with that family, don't you?"

Murdock nodded his head. Like BA, he was also furious at Face for letting his guard down, and was quietly cheering the big guy on. But like BA, he didn't also didn't want to mess with Maggie Sullivan, who was protecting Face like a Mama Bear protecting her cub.

Murdock wanted to get away from Bad Rock for a few hours, anyway. The team had been hired to do a job, and he and BA were going to complete it. "Come on, Big Guy," he said to BA. "Maggie's right, we do need to take care of that family. Hannibal would want us to do that." Murdock turned to Maggie then.

"Take care of Hannibal, Maggie. BA and I will be back before you know it." Maggie nodded her head, and Murdock focused on Face. "YOU stay away from him! You have caused enough damage!" Saying that, Murdock turned on his heel and walked to the van, followed by BA.

After the van drove out of sight, Maggie turned to Face. "BA and Murdock have forgotten that this is MY home, MY office, and MY patient. Go in and sit with Hannibal, Face. I think that you both need it. And I think that he needs to know that you are here and OK." She gently said, as she pushed Face back towards Hannibal's room. She had noticed that Murdock and BA hadn't let Face near Hannibal in three days. She also knew that Face needed to be there with Hannibal. And maybe on a subconscious level, Hannibal needed Face to be there as well.

So here Face was, sitting next to his commanding officers bed, clutching a newspaper in his hand. He wasn't sure why he had brought the paper in. Maybe it was to read the financial page during his vigil, or maybe it was to read to Hannibal. Face didn't consider that he had brought the paper in as an emotional shield, wanting to lose himself in facts instead of facing the knowledge that he was sitting beside his friend and mentor's bedside.

After trying to read the paper for fifteen minutes, and not succeeding, Face put the newspaper aside. He looked at Hannibal's face, and fought back the tears. Never before had Face noticed the thin lines around Hannibal's eyes.

Maybe because when he was awake, Hannibal's eyes sparkled with a zest for life, or they laughed when he found something humorous. They shined with mischief when he was "on the jazz", or flashed fire when he was angry. They glowed with compassion when one of his men was sick or injured. And they were the eyes Face looked to whenever he needed strength and acceptance.

Hannibal's eyes were truly the reflection of his soul, and Face was desperate for them to open. "Please Hannibal," he begged the older man. "Please wake up. I need you. Murdock and BA need you. Your team needs you, Hannibal! We need you to lead us. Please wake up." But Hannibal's eyes remained stubbornly closed.

Face squeezed Hannibal's hand with his own right hand. With his left, he started stroking Hannibal's silver hair. He chuckled as he remembered the teasing that he used to give Hannibal about his gray, and later silver, hair.

"Boy Hannibal, you sure have a lot of gray hair," a twenty-two year old Face teased his superior officer. He knew that Hannibal could take a little bit of kidding. The trick was to not tease too much, or he would be scrubbing the latrine with his new toothbrush.

Hannibal leveled a glare at his first officer. Sometimes the kid could be a real pain in the ass. "I told you before, kid. My hair is NOT gray. It's blonde."

Without missing a beat, Face quipped; "Yeah? Well, it's a very GRAY BLONDE." He laughed as he backed away, then turned and fled.

That night, as the rest of the team had drinks in the O club, Face was on his hands and knees in the latrine, cleaning it with his brand new toothbrush and wondering when he was going to learn to keep his big mouth shut.

<End Flashback>

Face continued stroking Hannibal's hair. Slowly, the words of a song that Face had once heard came to him. The song reflected how Face felt towards Hannibal, and he started to sing.

I've had my share
Of life's ups and downs.
But Fate's been kind.
The downs have been few.

I guess you could say,
That I've been lucky.
I guess you could say,
That it's all because of you!

If anyone should ever write my life's story,
For whatever reason there might be.
Oooo, You'll be there, between each line of pain and glory.
'Cause you're the best thing that ever happened to me!
You're the best thing that ever happened to me!
Ah, you're the best thing that ever happened to me.

Oh, there have been times when times were hard
But always somehow I made it, I made it through.
'Cause for every moment that I spent hurting
There was a moment that I spent, ah, just loving you.

If anyone should ever write my life story
For whatever reason there might be
Oh, you'll be there between each line o pain and glory
'Cause you're the best thing that ever happened to me
Oh, you're the best thing that ever happened to me.
I know, you're the best thing, oh, that ever happened to me.

Overcome with emotions, Face put his head down on the bed, and cried himself to sleep. He never saw Maggie wipe away tears from her eyes as she left the room. And he never felt a strong hand leave his own, and start slowly stroking his hair.

Later that day, Murdock and BA came back. Between the two of them, they were able to complete the mission successfully. They were stunned to find Hannibal propped up in his bed, holding a sleeping Face to the uninjured side of his chest while he talked with Maggie. Hannibal held a finger to his lips.

"Ssshh, don't wake him," he said weakly. "He's had a rough few days."

Before either man could protest, Maggie shooed them out. "Hannibal and Face need some time alone, guys," she said as she escorted the two men out of the sickroom. "Now, I saved some soup for you. And while you eat, I'm going to talk to the two of you about who's really in charge in MY office."

As he heard his girlfriend talking, Hannibal felt a stirring against his chest. He looked down to see two blue-green eyes staring back at him.

"Yeah, kid?"

"I'm sorry."

"I know, kid."

The eyes closed, then came open again. "Hannibal?"

"Yeah, kid?"

"I meant every word."

"Every word of what, Kid?" Hannibal asked, confused.

There was a sleepy yawn from his younger friend. "The song, Hannibal. You ARE the best thing that ever happened to me." Then the eyes closed once more.

Hannibal smiled softly, and stroked back the blonde strands of hair from Face's forehead. "The feeling is mutual, Kid. The feeling's mutual." And lulled by Faces soft breathing, Hannibal Smith fell asleep.
