"Fly High, Fly Free"

Face sat down on a wooden bench under a tall birch tree. The early morning light
highlighted his golden blonde hair. "Hello, Murdock. It's been a while. Just let
me say my piece and I'll be on my way."

He ran his fingers through his hair as he searched for the proper words.
"Looking back, I can see the little things I've over looked. You were giving me
subtle hints that something was wrong. You needed me, but I ignored you. I
thought there was plenty of time. I guess I was wrong."

Face took a couple deep breaths as he fought to control his emotions. "I just
never thought you would leave the way you did. At first I felt rejected and
abandoned, but I never really gave you a reason to stay, did I?" Face hung his
head in shame, not expecting an answer.

"Do you understand what I am trying to say? Or, am I just talking to myself
here? I should have said this long ago when it would have made a difference. I
love you, Murdock. You are my best friend, my brother. I'd give anything to
spend the rest of my life with you. But now it's too late."

Tears filled his eyes as he continued. "If I could turn back time, I'd tell you
every day how much I love you, how much I need you. I wish you'd come back. I
don't know how I can go on without you. Your absence is killing me. I'm paying
for all the times I took you for granted. Now it seems like you're the only
person I'm thinking about all day long."

Face thought back to the last time he had seen Murdock. He remembered the
distracted stare, the unusual lack of chatter, even the way he had smiled sadly
when he got out of the car. "You said goodbye when I dropped you off. You always
used to say see you later but you said goodbye."

He closed his eyes as the tears began to spill onto his cheeks. "I just wanted
to say I'm sorry. I shouldn't have let you go without a fight. You really took
me by surprise. I didn't even realize how much I loved you until you were gone.
But I had to tell you; you deserve to know. I've got to go now. Maybe I'll see
you again another time. I love you. Good-bye."

Face rose from the bench and started down the path toward his Corvette. He
paused and turned back for one last look.

"Fly high, fly free," he whispered. The words were his wish for the man he
loved. He read the words silently.

"Fly High, Fly Free"

Capt. H.M. Murdock

Beloved Friend, who will be greatly missed

The cold black marble headstone was a memorial Face,
Hannibal, and BA had agreed
suited their comrade. He had meant too much to them to ever be forgotten. Face
knew it would be impossible for him to ever forget. He blamed himself. He had
been the one to push Murdock over the edge. It had been his gun Murdock had
stolen. Face felt as if he had pulled the trigger himself. Love had given him a
second chance, but he'd missed it. No, he would never forget Murdock. He would
love him until the day he too would fly free.
