Warnings: angst, blood, nothing too serious yet, but I will warn you if it does.
Comments: This is a reply to Susie's personal challenge to me to come up with an unusual pet and have it join the ATeam.....now that hasn't happened yet....but it will...trust me..and when it does you can have the other bossypeeps to thank for it because they have given me the unusual pet ideas. I also apologize in advance for this because I haven't written anything longer then a 5 minute challenge in over a year so I am rusty.
Disclaimer: I don't own the ateam but I wouldn't kick any of them out of bed...
black and red van was being chased down the dusty desert road. Three unmarked
black sedans, with tinted windows, followed in pursuit.
"Crazy Fool, why did I ever let you talk me into coming down here?" BA growled as he maneuvered the van along the winding road. "Hannibal kill us if he found out we came down here."
"Listen, BA...the Colonel won't care when he finds out the reason. I have it on more then one reliable source that there is a real and true flying saucer back in that their compound and I just have to get a picture of it for the VA newspaper. They've made me their new star reporter ya know, Smile!" Murdock said proudly as he snapped a picture of BA.
"Get that thing out of my face, Fool! Can't you see I'm drivin?" BA swatted the camera with his one hand and continued to steer the van, trying to lose the men that were keeping close on their tail. "Get the weapons out of the back, Murdock and get them guys off us!"
"Okay-Dokey, Big Guy, but can I just get a quote from ya before I do? You know for the paper?" Murdock stuck a pretend microphone in front of BA's face causing the sergeant to nearly lose control of the vehicle.
"Get!" BA snarled.
Murdock grabbed the assault rifle from the back and opened fire on the vehicles that were in pursuit, he didn't want to hurt them, after all they were just doing their duty, but he needed to find away to stop them. He shot at the tires of the lead car causing it to swerve and go off the road. The other two cars avoided crashing and continued their chase. BA saw a side road and decided to try and make the turn, he over judged his speed and veered out of control. Murdock was tossed against the interior. The van rolled over and over until it finally came to a stop upside down amongst the desert plants. The tires spun and the engine continued to run. Inside, blood ran down Murdock's face as he lay unconscious, BA was partly thrown from the van.
"Suspects down, sir" the mysterious man in the dark suit and glasses said into his car radio.
"Proceed to the vehicle and use caution," came the crackled reply.
The two remaining cars skidded to a stop near the van, causing swirls of dust to erupt from under the tires. The leader of the group jumped from the car first. He began shouting orders to the other men as they too exited the vehicles. "You two secure the perimeter, you and you, check out the van!"
"Yes sir!" The two men moved closer to the van, guns drawn. One of the men slowly approached BA, he kicked him lightly with his foot. He didn't move.
The other man continued around the other side of the van, he reached in and felt for a pulse on Murdock. "This man isn't breathing, sir!"
"Move in! " The leader indicated to the rest of his men to help with Murdock and BA. "Get them out of there! They need medical attention."
Meanwhile back at Face's newly scammed penthouse, Hannibal was settled on the couch watching TV. "I don't like this Hannibal, BA and Murdock should have checked in an hour ago."
"Relax lieutenant, I am sure they are fine. BA's mama has probably been talking their ears off, they just haven't had a chance to get to the phone." Hannibal turned back to watch the television.
"I don't know, Hannibal," Face said as he poured some soda into his glass and came around to sit in the chair across from Hannibal. "It's not like BA or even Murdock, not to check in....I'm worried."
"Look, Decker hasn't been on our trail for weeks. I am sure Murdock and BA are fine. You know them, Murdock probably tried to have BA believing that his bologna sandwich had magical powers or something and they got in an argument and just got held up." Hannibal grinned at the thought of BA and Murdock on a road trip together.
The colonel's words did not reassure Face who was now nervously straightening his tie.
"Listen, Kid if it will make you feel better, let's call BA's mom and see if they are there. Then maybe I can get back to my show. We are supposed to be enjoying a little R&R you know."
Hannibal got up and went over to the phone. "Nice," he commented at the antique brass phone situated behind the bar.
"Would you just make the call, colonel!" Face replied frustrated.
Hannibal grinned and dialed the telephone. "Hello, Mrs. B....it's Hannibal Smith...yes, I'm fine....yes, yes, it's nice to hear your voice too...ah, listen Mrs. Baracus, the reason I'm calling is that BA and Murdock haven't checked in yet and I was just wondering if they got there...actually Face is the one that's worried." Hannibal laughed and shot Face a mischievous glance. "Huh, excuse me....they're not there and you didn't know they were supposed to be? Er...ah.. er...calm down, Mrs. B, I'm sure there is some explanation...it's probably just a mistake...yes ma'am, I'll let you know when I get this all straighten out....you take care...." Hannibal hung up the phone and turned to Face. "Now, I'm worried."
lay on the metallic table stripped to the waist. He was hooked to various
different machines, monitoring his pulse and respiration. He had stopped breathing
again and efforts by his captors to resuscitate him did not seem to be working.
"Get the crash cart stat!" Suddenly there was a flurry of activity as
they attempted to bring Murdock around. "Clear!"
Murdock's body bucked up in the air from the jolt of electricity. Nothing happened. "Again!" Still the flat line on the heart monitor refused to move. "Epinephrine-1miligram." After a few tense moments, the line started to flicker and grow stronger as Murdock's heart returned to life.
"He's back! Good work, sir," one of the other figures in the room commented. Everyone breathed a sigh of relief.
"Thank you, his condition is guarded. Keep me informed, notify me at once if anything changes and keep two guards posted outside his door at all times. We need to find out exactly who this man is and why he and his friend were trying to get inside this compound."
"Face we need to find out where Murdock and BA are."
"What's the plan, Colonel?"
"Well I suggest that we go to the VA hospital and see if there are any clues there." Hannibal and Face left the penthouse and went out to Face's vette. They headed off to Westwood.
"Let me go!" The little girl cried as the man tried to appease her with a stuffed animal.
"Listen Honey, you have to be a good... ah....little girl and stay here."
"No!" She cried out in a loud voice, stomped on the man's foot and ran off into the darkness.
"After her!" The man ordered, clutching his foot.
Two men headed off in the direction of the child.
BA woke up to find he was surrounded by a faint luminescent light. He slowly sat up, his head was pounding. He reached up and rubbed his head and neck trying to alleviate some of the pain. "Ahh...man....where am I?" BA commented groggily to the room. From the darkness he heard the sounds of a child's cry. "Who's there?"
The crying lessened, but BA was sure he heard it. "Listen, I won't hurt ya...come on out. I promise..."
The little girl slowly came out of the shadows and looked apprehensively at BA.
"Why ya cryin, little one?" BA asked as he stooped down to her height. He lightly brushed her dark hair from her eyes. She had the most amazing eyes that BA had ever seen. The little girl didn't say anything but her eyes widened when she heard the voices of the men that were after her.
"She must have come this way! You look in there, I'll look down this way!"
Desperate, she grabbed BA's hand, pleading with her eyes for him to follow. "Ok, little mama.." The child led him down a dark corridor. They came to a stop in front of a small metal door. She pointed to the door and BA attempted to move it. "It won't move, baby...we are goin' to have to go some place else." BA turned to leave, but she stopped him. She closed her eyes, concentrated for a moment, and suddenly the door started to move... it opened enough for her and BA to slip inside and then it closed behind them. BA shook his head in disbelief.
The little girl looked up at him and smiled. "My name is Genevieve."
did ya do that?"
Genevieve just looked at BA and giggled. The two men, who were chasing them, ran past the door without noticing it. "We have to go," Genevieve said and grabbed BA by the hand. "They will find us."
BA shook his head again and relented. He followed after the little girl. She led him to a room under the compound. "We can hide in here."
BA didn't know what to make of the situation. But until he could figure this out and find Murdock, he would go along with Genevieve's plan. He went over to the corner of the room and sat down, his headache was worsening and his vision was beginning to blur. "I'm hurtin'," he said to the little girl.
Slowly, she came over to him and placed her hand on his head. She closed her eyes and concentrated. BA felt a warm sensation flow through his head, then the pain left his body. He sat back against the wall and looked quizzically at Genevieve. She smiled at him and curled up in his arms. "I'll get us out of here, little mama...don't worry."
"What do you mean, you lost her?" the man, who had saved Murdock's life, shouted as he took his glasses off his face.
"I'm sorry, sir. She got away from me. I sent Davis and Patterson after her, I am sure they will find her, sir."
"Oh they'd better, Briggs, or you will find yourself so far down in a dark hole that not even your mother will hear you scream. Are we clear on that?"
"Good, and when you find her, bring her directly to me. It's about time that she learned her place around here." The man turned toward the window and looked up into the night sky. "She will learn to obey me."
"Where is he?"
"I don't know....I just went to get some stuff to clean up his wounds and when I got back he wasn't here," the young man replied nervously.
"Well, we had better find him and quickly."
The two men headed off to find BA.
lieutenant, you know what to do," Hannibal said as they sat in the corvette
outside the VA hospital.
"Right." Face got out of the car and straightened out his disguise. He walked into the main entrance. He forcefully walked up to the front desk and cleared his throat.
The nurse on duty looked up. "Can I help you?"
"Yes, I am here to pick up a patient...." Face scanned his clipboard. "Ah yes....a Captain HM Murdock."
"And you are?" the nurse queried suspiciously.
"Doctor Perry Ross," Face smiled. " I am with the Southern California Academy of Medicine or SCAM as we affectionately refer to it."
The nurse nodded.
"As I was saying, Captain Murdock has been selected to participate in our new research program. I am here to transport him to our facility for treatment.
"Well, I am sorry, Dr. Ross, but Captain Murdock has escaped. We have our people out looking for him, but I'm afraid that Murdock usually only comes back when he is ready."
"You mean, Captain Murdock has done this before?" Face pretended to feign shock and disbelief.
"Yes, I'm afraid so," the nurse replied. "Numerous times."
"Nurse Hanson, it is imperative that I find out the whereabouts of Captain Murdock. The leeches we use in our treatment are only good if used within 72 hours of hatching. Ours hatched yesterday. I need to find Captain Murdock and get him to the treatment facility ASAP. Do you think it would be possible that I look in his room...maybe I can find some clues as to where he went?"
"Oh, I don't know Doctor, it's against policy."
"Policy!" Face raised his voice. "Nurse Hanson, we are talking about a man's last chance at a normal life.... his one chance to live outside these walls, to experience the joy of freedom, to finally have his sanity back.... surely, we can't let a little thing like policy stand in the way...now can we?"
"Er...well, I guess it would be okay."
Nurse Hanson and Face proceeded down the hall until they came to Murdock's room. She slipped the key into the door and Face went in. Murdock's room was a hodge-podge of video games, stuffed animals, trinkets and other assorted items. Above his bed hung a giant poster of a UFO. The words 'They are out there' were written under it in bold black letters. A few model spaceships hung from the ceiling. "Ah, was Captain Murdock into space aliens and flying saucers, Nurse Hanson?" Face queried as he looked around the room.
"Well, Doctor Ross....this was Murdock's newest obsession. He even talked about going down to some secret government installation in Nevada and trying to get a picture of one of the darned things. He was convinced they are real. Poor man." She shook her head in pity.
A sense of urgency came over Face. "Oh thank you, Nurse Hanson, I have to be leaving. It was nice meeting you," Face said and quickly headed for the door.
"But Doctor....don't you want to check around and see if there any more clues?"
"No thank you, I think I have all the information I need," Face replied from out in the hallway.
"But, Doctor Ross....what about the leeches...Dr. Ross?" She shouted out to him, but Face was already out of the hospital and heading for the vette.
"Hannibal, I think I know where Murdock and BA are and you are not going to believe it!" Face commented as he took off his fake mustache and glasses and got into the car next to the colonel.
"Try me," Hannibal replied and lit up a cigar.
"They've headed off to Nevada to get a picture of a flying saucer."
The colonel turned and stared at his second in command. "Huh?"
stirred in BA's arms. She had slept peacefully for the last couple of hours and
was now coming around. She opened her eyes and a panicked look came to her
face. She quickly got up and ran to the other side of the room. BA wiped the
sleepiness from his eyes and went over to the little girl. "Whatcha'
"They're coming!" She stated and tried to hide.
"I don't hear nothin,' baby...you sure?"
Genevieve shook her head furiously and then before BA knew it she was gone. A tiny little mouse scampered into the shadows. BA looked around in disbelief. 'Had he dreamed this?' He shook his head. "I gotta find Murdock and get out of this place."
BA quickly moved from the room, he heard the guards coming down the hall towards his position. He made his way through the various tunnels until he came to a room guarded by two men in dark suits. He peered into one of the windows. "Murdock?"
Inside the room, Murdock lay on the table still hooked to the various monitors and machines. The steady rhythm on the heart monitor suggested that his heart was still going strong. BA knew that he could not risk a rescue attempt with the guards by the door. He wished Hannibal and Face were here. "I'll come back for you buddy," he whispered and headed off to see if he could find some way into that room.
"Told you, you wouldn't believe me, Hannibal!" Face quipped.
"They are in Nevada! Face, why on earth would they go to Nevada?"
"Get this Colonel, Murdock's latest obsession...Flying Saucers and little green men. I just don't know how he convinced BA to go along with his crazy scheme....Murdock never ceases to amaze me, Hannibal."
Hannibal nodded his head. "Well, it looks like we are off to Nevada...huh? Lieutenant?"
"I don't know, Colonel, I just hope when we get there....BA and Murdock haven't been beamed aboard the mother ship or something. I would hate to waste an eight hour trip."
Hannibal laughed and puffed on his cigar. "Drive, Lieutenant!"
Briggs went up to the solid metal door and pushed the intercom button.
"Yes, what is it, Briggs?" Brenner asked without looking up from the file he was reading.
"Sir, Patterson and Davis have been unable to locate Genevieve."
"What? In my office now, Briggs!" He pushed the button on his desk and the huge door opened. Briggs gulped nervously and stepped inside. "Explain yourself!" Brenner demanded.
"Well, sir....she seems to have disappeared."
"Listen, you know as well as I do if Genevieve doesn't have her injection soon, we will no longer be able to control her abilities. I am sure, as we speak, that her capabilities are already beginning to multiply, Briggs. That is not good."
"I know, sir. I know." Briggs shifted his weight nervously from side to side. "Sir?"
"Yes, what is it now?"
"Sir, it has come to my attention that the second suspect has also vanished."
Brenner stood up from his desk and went over to his window. "Am I working with a bunch of incompetent idiots?"
"Sir, we are doing the best we.."
"I don't want excuses, Briggs. I want you to find them and bring them to me, now! Or you will not be happy, Briggs....I can assure you of that! Understood?"
"Yes, sir!" Briggs left the room, he took a handkerchief from his breast pocket and wiped the sweat from his brow. He needed a plan and he needed one quickly. Briggs pulled himself together and headed off to regroup his men and find the escapees.
Brenner went over to the red telephone on the corner of his desk. He hesitantly picked up the receiver and dialed. "Get me the Gray Eagle!" Brenner ordered. "We have a situation here." A moment passed and Brenner heard the gruff voice on the other end of the line. "Sir, Operation Wildcat is in jeopardy..."
The little mouse scampered past the two guards in front of Murdock's door. It poked curiously around the room, sniffing and exploring every nook and cranny. It sat up on its hind legs. The mouse listened to the beeping of the heart monitor and the rhythmic sounds of Murdock's breathing. It surveyed its surroundings one last time and then went to the foot of Murdock's bed. Within an instant the mouse transformed back into the dark haired little girl. Genevieve looked behind her to see if the guards noticed her. She quietly approached the head of Murdock's bed and placed her tiny hand onto his. The orange glow traveled down his arm and the warmth radiated throughout Murdock's body.
In a few moments, Murdock opened his eyes. He looked around the room confused. "BA!"
"Shh..."came the warning from the little girl. "We must be very quiet."
Murdock looked down at Genevieve and smiled.
He removed the wires from his chest and got up off the bed. He went over to the corner of the room and quickly slipped his clothes back on. Murdock noticed the two guards outside the door, he didn't know how he was going to get past them. Then a puzzling thought came to his mind. "How did you get in here, baby?" he asked as he stooped down and took the little girl's hands into his.
An impish smile came to Genevieve's face. She went over to the door and placed her hands on it. It glowed brightly and before long the two guards passed out onto the tile floor. Murdock blinked his eyes and shook his head in amazement. The little girl reached out her hand and Murdock took it. "I know where your friend is...I will show you." She giggled and led Murdock out of the room
gathered his men into a well lit conference room. "Listen, we need to find
Genevieve and the second suspect immediately...Anderson you take Ford and Giles
with you and search the south corridor. Patterson you and Davis...."
"Sir," the young man interrupted as he came urgently into the room. "Suspect One is missing! Stevens and Johnson were found unconscious and he has escaped!"
Briggs flopped into the closest chair. "Damn!" How was he going to explain this to Brenner?
Genevieve and Murdock continued creeping quietly down the hall until they came upon a room filled with rows of filing cabinets and medical supplies. She looked up at Murdock and pointed to a small office adjacent to the room. Murdock nodded his head and went over to the office. He opened the door and slipped inside. Suddenly, from out of the shadows a figure lunged at him. "Argh.."
"Hannibal, I have one question. Once we get to this base, how are you planning to get us in? I am sure it has very tight security," Face inquired nervously. "And I swear, Hannibal, if you say 'through the front door lieutenant'... I will turn this car around and go home!"
Hannibal laughed. Face just raised his eyebrows at the grinning colonel.
"Big Guy!" Murdock exclaimed and threw his arms around the sergeant.
BA smiled a quick smile and then pushed Murdock off of him. "Get off me, sucka! How did ya get out?"
Murdock turned to the little girl, who was peeking into the office, and pointed.
"Genevieve!" BA went over and picked her up. "You had me worried sick, little mama," he scolded gently.
Murdock grinned and tasseled Genevieve's hair. "We have ourselves one 'special little lady' here, I think."
Genevieve pointed to a filing cabinet situated in the corner of the office.
"I think she wants us to look in there, BA." Murdock went over to the filing cabinet and attempted to open it. "Rats! I wish Faceman was here, he's the one with the magic fingers."
The little girl went over and touched the lock with her finger. The drawers popped open. "Well now, I think you may just give the ol' lieutenant a run for his money." Murdock smiled at the little girl. " Hey BA, I wonder how well she could scam?"
"Shut up, fool! See what's in the filin' cabinet...we don' have time for your crazy jibber-jabber."
Murdock reached in and pulled out a folder labeled 'Operation Wildcat'. He opened the files and began reading. "Well, well, well...looks like our little Genevieve is...." A faint noise interrupted his reading.
"What was that?"
"I don't know BA, but we'd better get out of here!" Murdock quickly put the folder under his shirt and closed the drawer. He picked up Genevieve and the three of them made their way out of the room, carefully avoiding the agents who were searching for them. They ducked into a small room located a few yards from Brenner's office. Murdock set Genevieve down on the floor. "We have to figure a way to get out of this place and get Genevieve to safety."
BA nodded in agreement.
The pilot stooped down to meet the little girl's eyes. "Genevieve, do you know a way out of here?"
"Yes, but there are a lot of bad men around there."
Murdock grinned. "Genevieve, if we get there, do you think you could do what you did to the two men before and knock them out?"
The little girl grinned. "Yes," she giggled out, a mischievous smile on her face.
"She smiles just like Hannibal, don't you think, BA?"
"Yeah man....just like she's on the jazz." BA shook his head.
"Lead the way!" Murdock said to Genevieve.
it Briggs!" Brenner shouted. "You are obviously incapable of completing
this assignment. You are officially relieved of duty. Guards, take Agent Briggs
and lock him up until I can think of a more fitting punishment for him.... get
him out of my sight!"
"Yes, sir!" The two men grabbed Briggs and escorted him to the holding room located beneath the compound. The guards slammed the cell door shut causing an echo to reverberate down the hall.
Briggs went over to the bunk and sat down on the hard mattress, he ran his fingers furiously through his hair. "Dammit!"
Meanwhile, Brenner went over to a white box that he had locked in one of his filing cabinets. He took a syringe and a small bottle of clear liquid and filled the needle. He hastily threw the box back into the cabinet and hurried out of the office.
Murdock, BA and Genevieve were nearing the main exit to the compound. They ducked behind a storage locker. "Okay, there are at least three guards, that I can see, all heavily armed," Murdock said quietly, attempting to remain undetected.
"How are we gonna get past them, man?" BA asked as he nervously looked around.
Genevieve giggled and placed her hands on the floor. It glowed a bright orange. The guards turned and were soon overtaken by the light. They struggled for a moment but then collapsed onto the floor.
Murdock gave the little girl a quick hug. "Let's go!"
The three of them went to the door. Genevieve placed her hand on the locking mechanism and it responded by raising the door. BA and Murdock grinned. They grabbed Genevieve's hand and turned to leave, but they were greeted by five agents brandishing automatic weapons. Brenner went over and stuck the syringe into Genevieve's shoulder. The little girl crumpled into a heap on the ground.
"Genevieve!" Murdock shouted, but it was too late. The guards surrounded them.
"I'm gonna make you pay for that, sucka!" BA snarled at Brenner.
"Take those two to the holding cell and take Genevieve back to her cage." He ordered.
Murdock struggled with the guards as they took them down to the holding cell,
containing Agent Briggs. The two guards shoved Murdock and BA into the cell and
closed the door. "We found these two with Genevieve, Agent Briggs."
The guard stated to Briggs who just nodded.
"Well, I see you have recovered from our little desert chase." Agent Briggs said dryly as he looked at Murdock. "Thanks to Brenner you are in the land of the living. You should be thanking him, instead of trying to sabotage his efforts."
Murdock narrowed his eyes.
Briggs shook his head. "Why didn't you just leave well enough alone? You probably would have been set free, if you two hadn't gotten yourself mixed up with something you had no business getting involved with. You have no idea what goes on in this place."
The pilot ignored Briggs' comments and went and sat down on the bunk. He remembered the file he had hidden and took it out.
"Where did you get that?" Briggs demanded.
"Never you mind that!" Murdock replied as he scanned the contents of the file. "You just tell me why the United States Government decided to take a little baby wildcat from its mama, infuse it with alien DNA and transform it into some sort of freak of nature. For what purpose?"
"Probably to use her as a weapon, man." BA commented, upon hearing Genevieve's true identity.
Murdock's eyes widened. "You're right, BA, with Genevieve's abilities, she could be used against the Soviets.... Is that what you want to use her for, Briggs? Turn her into some sort of commie killing machine?"
Agent Briggs got up and went to the other side of the cell. He didn't answer Murdock's question.
Murdock looked at him. "How could you use a innocent creature that way? How could you drug her and keep her locked up in a cage...no one should be treated that way...no one."
"It is necessary to keep her controlled. How else can we learn to use her powers to our advantage?" Briggs commented coldly. "Do you want to see us lose to those commie bastards?"
BA shook his head. "She is just a little girl, man!"
Briggs smirked. "Despite her appearance, Genevieve is nothing more then a lab animal. Her only reason for being, is to be experimented on for the purpose of National Defense.... her abilities can help the USA remain the most powerful nation on the face of the Earth. Her comfort means nothing in comparison to what she can be used for." Briggs turned his back to Murdock and looked out of the bars. "She was created and can be destroyed just as easily!"
Murdock felt a sense of rage take hold of him. He went over and grabbed Briggs, slamming him into the metal. "Now, you listen to me, scumbag.... Genevieve is more then a lab rat. She is a living, breathing, intelligent being, which is more then I can say for you. And when I get my hands on your boss I will make him regret the day he ever brought me back to life!"
It wasn't often the pilot displayed such anger, but BA knew when someone Murdock cared about was in danger, his dark side bubbled to the surface. BA went over and put a hand on Murdock's shoulder. " It's ok, Murdock....we'll get her."
The pilot shoved Briggs into the bars one more time for emphasis and then released him. Briggs gasped for breath and went and sat down on the cot. Murdock took off his baseball cap and ran his fingers through his hair. "We have to find a way out of here."
A smile came to the pilot's face. "Hey BA...I think our friend here is feeling faint."
"Yeah man," BA smirked and grabbed Briggs.
The man carried Genevieve back to a cage located in Brenner's office. He placed the little girl back inside the cold steel. He locked the cage and gave Brenner the key.
"That will be all!" Brenner ordered and the man left.
Brenner went over to Genevieve and smiled wickedly at her. "You have been a very naughty girl today, running off like that and worrying us half to death." A callous sarcasm in his voice. "I'm afraid you will have to be punished." Brenner went over to his desk and pushed a button, which sent electricity flowing through the cage. Genevieve cried out in fear and anguish. "You will learn to obey me, Genevieve!" He pushed the button again and the little girl cried out once more her dark eyes filled with pain.
Brenner released the button and went behind his desk. He looked up at Genevieve. "Next time... I will not be as lenient."
The little girl curled herself up into a ball and sobbed.
Guard!! Come quickly!" Murdock shouted to get the attention of the guard
that was posted at the entrance to the tunnel
"What is it?" He demanded.
"I don't know...Agent Briggs was fine and then the next minute he grabbed his chest and keeled over. I think he may have had a heart attack."
The guard opened the cell door and went rushing in. "I don't think he is breathing," Murdock added, a panicked look on his face.
The guard went over to Briggs and reached down to feel for a pulse. BA hit the man on the back, knocking him unconscious. "Get up, Briggs!" BA shouted and smacked him in the face to bring him around. Briggs groaned. The sergeant stuffed Briggs' handkerchief into the agent's mouth. BA used his bandana to secure the handkerchief in place.
"Let's move!" Murdock ordered. They disarmed the guard, left the cell and went upstairs. It took them nearly two hours to get to Brenner's office, because the entire compound was on a state of red alert. Brenner had beefed up security and it was not easy getting past the guards.
Finally, they approached Brenner's office. "How we gonna get him to open the door?"
Murdock smiled and pointed to the intercom. BA held his gun to Agent Briggs' temple, emphasizing his need to remain quiet. The pilot got up and pushed the button, with the best 'top secret government agent voice' he could muster; He spoke. "Sir, we have a situation in the holding cell."
"Can't you handle it...I am very busy."
Murdock cleared his throat. "No sir, I'm sorry but this situation requires your attention. Immediately, sir!"
"Very well!" Brenner punched the button and the door opened. "What is it?" he said without looking up from his desk.
Murdock and BA pointed their guns at Brenner. "Be very quiet, muchacho and me and my compadre here won't turn you into swiss cheese," the pilot hissed.
Brenner sat back in his chair, staring at BA. Murdock went over to the little girl and smiled at her. She immediately went to him and stuck her arms out through the bars. Murdock grabbed her little hand and kissed her chubby fingers. "It'll be okay, baby.....we will get you out of there."
"You will never get away with this!" Brenner shouted.
Murdock laughed. "Ohh....If only I had a nickel for every time someone said that to me. I would be the richest man in the whole wide world."
Brenner was not amused. "Genevieve is not some poor little girl in need of rescue...she is the center of a research project that will bring this country greatness."
"Save your speeches for the politicians! My friend and I have already heard the spiel from your goon, Briggs here," Murdock said and pushed Briggs onto Brenner's desk.
"Yeah sucka! Genevieve deserves to be free....to go home," BA snarled.
Murdock narrowed his eyes. "Now I suggest, muchacho that you give me the key to this cage, so I can get Genevieve and take her home like my friend wants." Murdock raised his gun and pointed it at Brenner.
Brenner reached for the key and while doing so pressed a silent alarm, within seconds the office was filled with armed guards. "Drop your weapons!"
Murdock and BA placed their weapons on the ground. The men grabbed them. "Take them back to the cell!"
"Briggs, you remain here!"
Agent Briggs looked nervously at Brenner.
Hannibal and Face approached a filling station situated in the middle of the Nevada desert about forty miles outside of Las Vegas. "This guy has got to know something Hannibal...this is the last gas station for miles. BA and Murdock had to come through here."
"You're right, Kid. Pull in there!" Face maneuvered the corvette into a spot in front of the gas pumps and turned off the motor. He got out and stretched, looking around at nothing but sand and mountains. Hannibal went over to the old man who was sitting in a chair reading a newspaper. "Excuse me, sir, you wouldn't have happened to see two men in here. Tall skinny guy wearing a blue baseball cap and a big guy, lotsa gold jewelry?"
The old man looked up at Hannibal. "I seem to recall those two boys came in here last evenin'....fightin' like cats and dogs they was..."
Hannibal smiled. "Did they say where they were headed?"
"Well, if my memory serves me correctly, they wanted to know the whereabouts of that 'Top secret' gover'ment base that's 'suppose' to be 'round here someplace. In fact, the big one told me that he had always wanted to see a 'real spaceship'.... said it out of earshot of the skinny fella, didn't want him ta know, I reckon....."
Hannibal turned to Face and shrugged his shoulders, exchanging a 'well now that's something I never thought I would hear about BA' look with the lieutenant.
The old man continued speaking. "All those alien hunters come down to these parts searching for UFO's.... dang fools."
Hannibal grinned. "Do you know which way this base is, sir?"
"Over yonder off of highway 375 about fifty or so miles from here....I gotta map of that area... if that'll help ya, mister."
"Yes, sir, thank you, that would be very helpful." Hannibal turned to Face. "Filler up, Lieutenant and ah... don't forget to check the oil, huh?" Hannibal laughed and followed the old man inside.
"Right," Face sighed and reached for the nozzle.
