Murdock looked around the small motel room.
"Want me to take the floor?" Murdock asked.
"No. That's o.k. I don't think there are any extra blankets, and it's cold in here. Besides, it's only for one night."
Murdock nodded and went to the bathroom to get ready for bed. Face sat down on the one chair in the room and tried to steady his heart. When Murdock emerged from the bathroom, he had showered and put on a pair of pajamas. Face quickly went to take his shower. When he came out, Murdock was already in the bed asleep. He sighed and turned off the light as he crawled into bed
beside him. He lay as still as a mouse for a few minutes and finally spoke.
"No. Are you?"
Face smiled in the darkness. "No." There was silence again. "Murdock?"
"How are they treating you at the V.A.?"
"Having any trouble?"
"Uh...no. Why? Have you heard something?"
He heard Murdock yawn. The two were lying back to back in the full size bed. Face knew the pilot was tired, but he couldn't help it. "We sure wrapped this job up quick."
"I sprung you on a two week pass. What are you going to do with your extra week?"
"Well, Hannibal has auditions and B.A. is putting in some time at the children's center, so I'll probably just go back a week early."
"What about me?"
"What about you?"
"You mentioned Hannibal and B.A., but you didn't mention me."
"Oh. Well, I figured you had a scam or two going on, and at least one date a night. Besides, I've bothered you enough lately."
There was silence as Face thought about this. "I don't have anything going on this week. In fact, I thought about taking a vacation."
"The Gulf coast. I've never been."
"You'll like it. They have pretty beaches and a laid back style."
"Yeah." Face swallowed hard. "Want to go with me?"
"I don't know. I'm sure you'd have more luck with the ladies if I wasn't there and I'd end up only being in the way."
"No you wouldn't. I'd really like it if you would go with me."
"Well...o.k. When do we leave?"
"Day after tomorrow. I have two first class tickets and a convertible waiting at the airport when we land."
"Yeah." There was silence again. "Murdock?"
"Do you remember the first time you told me about the Gulf coast?" Face thought his heart would explode as he waited for Murdock to answer.
Finally, Murdock spoke. "Yeah. We were on a pass in Hawaii. You were talking about the beaches in Southern California, and I told you about my childhood vacations on the Alabama coast."
The disappointment in Face's voice made Murdock smile. He had figured out a long time ago where this conversation was headed. He decided Face had been through enough agony. He turned over and pulled Face close to him. He felt the con man tense. "As I recall Lieutenant, we were laying like this at the time."
Face relaxed into Murdock's arms. "Yeah. I think we were," he choked out.
"Want me to turn back over?" Murdock whispered softly in his ear.
"Is this what you want?"
"Why haven't you said anything?"
"I don't know. I was scared I guess. It's been years since we were...together."
"Are you scared now?"
"Very much so."
"What are you scared of?"
"That you'll let go."
Murdock hugged the younger man tighter. "I promise I won't."
"I never stopped loving you."
"Neither did I."
Face turned over and looked into the pilot's eyes. "Really?"
"Are you gonna kiss me now?"
"If you want me to."
"I want you to."
The two former lovers shared a kiss that spoke of old secrets and new promises. When they finally pulled apart, Murdock smiled. "Commercial flight, huh? You losing trust in my piloting skills?"
"Never. I just want you well rested for the gulf front condo with the king size bed I've rented."
Face drifted to sleep with Murdock laughing softly. As he lay in his lover's arms, Face felt something he hadn't felt in a long time. For a minute he struggled to place the feeling. When he did, he smiled softly and thought to himself, 'Oh yes. I remember now. Completeness.'
